Summary

Quirky, surprising and entertaining - with more than 400 houses, Jutaku is architecture at the speed of Japan。

Frenetic。 Pulsating。 Disorienting。 Japan's contemporary culture is constantly in flux。 In stark contrast to the centuries old imperial architecture of Kyoto, recent Japanese architectural practices have ushered in an era of continuous experimentation。

With 500 houses, one house per page, one image per house, Jutaku: Japanese Houses is a fast-paced, "quick hit" shock to the system that shines a Harajuku-bright neon light on the sheer volume, variety and novelty of contemporary Japanese residential architecture。

Featuring the work of many of Japan's most famous architects including Shigeru Ban, Sou Fujimoto, Toyo Ito, Kengo Kuma, Jun Igarishi, Shuhei Endo and dozens of up and coming and completely unknown young architects, Jutaku is organized geographically taking readers on a bullet train journey across Japan's architectural landscape。 Essential reading for architects, designers and fans of contemporary Japanese culture。

Lots of interesting and beautiful pictures of futuristic or naturalistic looking homes。 I wish the photos were larger though。 The tiny pages don't do them justice。 Lots of interesting and beautiful pictures of futuristic or naturalistic looking homes。 I wish the photos were larger though。 The tiny pages don't do them justice。 。。。more

There are photographs of the fronts of interesting houses, but that’s it。 It would’ve been better with descriptions of use of interior space or perhaps even floor plans。

The book and architecture is great but I would have liked to have seen inside the houses too, not just the exteriors。

Zoe

Pictures without comments or reviews。 A handbook of inspirations?

Jessica

Absolutely fascinating - Would love to look inside a few of these houses。

Claire

This is a tricky one。 Because some of these houses are just stunning。 Other houses are cement or cinder block monstrosities。 I would like to see the layout inside these homes。

I'm a sucker for domestic architecture, so this book was right in my wheelhouse。 After a short but interesting introduction to some of the concepts you'll see later in the book, it's just beautiful photographs of really cool, mostly very tiny, Japanese houses, with a few statistics, such house size and plot size, and neat little visualizations of how much of the plot's footprint is taken up by the house and how big the house is compared to all the rest of the houses in the book。 It covers all th I'm a sucker for domestic architecture, so this book was right in my wheelhouse。 After a short but interesting introduction to some of the concepts you'll see later in the book, it's just beautiful photographs of really cool, mostly very tiny, Japanese houses, with a few statistics, such house size and plot size, and neat little visualizations of how much of the plot's footprint is taken up by the house and how big the house is compared to all the rest of the houses in the book。 It covers all the main islands of Japan, and would make a terrific coffee table book if it wasn't so small。 。。。more

A gift full of ideas。 Pollock always seems to be looking at Japanese places and things。 She also wrote "Made in Japan: 100 New Products。" This book is 5"x 8" x 1。5" and has 470 images of houses organized by prefecture。 Each house is unique and modern and usually less than 1000 sq ft, the typical house size。 There are icons for number of occupants and how the house sits on the lot。 I would have liked more info, floor plans for instance, but I'm thankful for this snapshot in time。 Many may not be A gift full of ideas。 Pollock always seems to be looking at Japanese places and things。 She also wrote "Made in Japan: 100 New Products。" This book is 5"x 8" x 1。5" and has 470 images of houses organized by prefecture。 Each house is unique and modern and usually less than 1000 sq ft, the typical house size。 There are icons for number of occupants and how the house sits on the lot。 I would have liked more info, floor plans for instance, but I'm thankful for this snapshot in time。 Many may not be here in 20 years, since the land is so much more valuable than the house, and people usually rebuild when/if they can find land。 。。。more

A well-crafted, nicely documented look into modern styles of Japanese architecture。 Works as more of a visual essay or a collection of inspirational photos rather than a deep analysis, but does its job succinctly。 Wouldn't use it as food for thought, but rather food for imagination。 The infographics that go along with each house's feature page is perhaps the only clunky thing about the whole book- they really only serve as flavor rather than providing much useful information。 All in all a visual A well-crafted, nicely documented look into modern styles of Japanese architecture。 Works as more of a visual essay or a collection of inspirational photos rather than a deep analysis, but does its job succinctly。 Wouldn't use it as food for thought, but rather food for imagination。 The infographics that go along with each house's feature page is perhaps the only clunky thing about the whole book- they really only serve as flavor rather than providing much useful information。 All in all a visually stimulating, but not much of a "book" book。 。。。more

This book would be good for someone wondering how many different ways a building can be made to look like a bunker。

As one would expect from Phaidon this is a beautifully produced architectural feast for the eyes。 As a photographic essay about modern Japanese housing it works perfectly。 This book shows that the surreal world described in the works of Murakami and Studio Ghibli is firmly based on a hyper reality。 Redefines what we think of as home。
